Institutional Capacity of Environmental CSOs in Morocco
This report investigates the operational landscape of environmental civil society organizations (CSOs) in Morocco, based on extensive fieldwork in Rabat, Meknes, and Figuig. It highlights, as well, key structural challenges, such as financial instability, and lack of technical expertise, limited advocacy and research capacities, and constrained access to environmental data.
The report also examines limited civic engagement opportunities, inadequate legal frameworks, and coalition dynamics and barriers, while offering targeted recommendations to enhance legal and institutional support, foster financial sustainability, and strengthen advocacy through coalition-building and digital tools.
This research is part of the DIRAIA project, ‘Knowledge’ in Arabic, short for “Developing Inclusive Research through Activism and Informed Advocacy,” which is a comprehensive initiative addressing the knowledge gap on environmental activism in the MENA region. Focusing on Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Iraq, DIRAIA explores the dynamics, strategies, and resilience of environmental mobilization within the context of social justice and governance challenges.
The project is implemented in partnership with the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI), is part of the Knowledge Alliance for Environmental Defenders (KALLIED) network, and is funded by Canada´s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
