Environmental Advocacy in Morocco : Challenges, Strategies, and Institutional Barriers – Report
This report, produced by the Moroccan Institute for Policy Analysis (MIPA) in collaboration with Imru Al Qays Talha Jebril, explores the landscape of environmental advocacy and mobilization in Morocco, examining its struggles, strategies, and systemic obstacles.
Through fieldwork in Figuig, Rabat, and Meknes, alongside interviews with activists and civil society leaders across Morocco, the report highlights how activists navigate a complex political environment, balancing local mobilization, legal advocacy, and coalition-building while facing financial constraints, and limited access to environmental data.
It also examines the role of women and youth in advocacy, and how environmental defenders leverage international treaties and decentralized governance efforts to push for change.
This research is part of DIRAIA project, ‘Knowledge’ in Arabic, short for “Developing Inclusive Research through Activism and Informed Advocacy,” which is a comprehensive initiative addressing the knowledge gap on environmental activism in the MENA region. Focusing on Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Iraq, DIRAIA explores the dynamics, strategies, and resilience of environmental mobilization within the context of social justice and governance challenges.
This project, implemented in partnership with the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI), is part of Knowledge Alliance for Environmental Defenders (KALLIED) network and is funded by Canada´s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
